L.A. County Enacts Eviction Protections for Fire-Affected Residents and Business Owners
Updated: Mar 3

In response to the devastating January 2025 wildfires, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to implement eviction protections for workers and small business owners financially impacted by the fires.
Key Components of the Eviction Protections:
Six-Month Eviction Moratorium: Affected tenants are protected from eviction through July 31, 2025. To qualify, tenants must demonstrate financial hardship due to the fires and actively seek relief through unemployment benefits, wildfire assistance programs, or job searches.
Rental Assistance Funds: The Board has allocated $10 million in rental assistance, which will be directed to landlords on behalf of tenants. Additional philanthropic funds are being sought to further support affected renters.
Prohibition of Late Fees: Landlords are prohibited from charging late fees or penalties on rental debt accrued during the protection period.
This initiative aims to prevent further displacement and homelessness in a county already facing severe housing challenges. The resolution took effect immediately upon approval, providing much-needed relief to those recovering from the disaster.
